Moldy weed is not safe to smoke, so throw it out. Mold looks like dull white, gray, or greenish fuzz, powder, or cobwebs that don't sparkle the way trichomes do. It smells musty, like a damp basement. Moldy buds feel damp, spongy, or slimy, and the center may be brown and soft.
Cutting around mold or heating it doesn't make it safe. If you already took a puff or two and you're healthy, you'll most likely just cough or get a scratchy throat. If you have a weak immune system, call your doctor. If you have asthma or a mold allergy and symptoms don't settle, call your doctor too.

What does moldy weed look like?
Mold on weed is usually one of three things. All of them look like something added on top of the bud, not part of it.
- White or gray fuzz or powder. Patches that look like flour, cotton, or dust, often tucked in the creases of the bud or near the stem.
- Web-like strands. Thin gray or white threads that look like a cobweb or lint stuck to the bud.
- Dark spots or a brown, mushy center. This is bud rot. It starts inside a dense bud at the stem. The outside can look fine while the inside is brown or gray, soft, and dusty.
Mold is dull. It stays flat and matte when you tilt the bud under a light. Anything that sparkles is not mold.
Color is a clue, not a rule. People search for white, black, and brown mold on weed. Any of those colors means the same thing: toss it.
Moldy weed vs. trichomes: how to tell them apart
Trichomes are the tiny resin glands that make buds look frosty. Beginners mistake them for mold all the time, and the other way around. Here is the difference.
| Feature | Trichomes (normal) | Kief (normal, loose resin dust) | Mold (toss it) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shine | Sparkles when you tilt it under a light | Sparkly dust | Dull, matte, flat |
| Pattern | Even coating over the whole bud | Loose powder at the bottom of the jar or grinder | Patches in one spot, often in creases or at the stem |
| Up close | Tiny clear or amber balls on stalks | The same tiny balls, knocked loose | Fuzz, threads, or flat powder with no shine |
| Smell | Like the strain: skunky, fruity, piney | Strong, like the strain | Musty, mildew, damp basement, wet hay |
| Feel | Sticky | Dry powder | Damp, spongy, or slimy |
The flashlight trick: hold the bud under your phone light and tilt it. Trichomes glitter like frost. Mold doesn't.
What does moldy weed smell like?
Musty. People describe it as a damp basement, wet laundry, old hay, or a moldy barn. If a bud smells like the inside of a cellar instead of like weed, trust your nose. If you already smoked some, it probably tasted musty or harsh.
Don't confuse musty with faint. Old weed that has dried out smells weak or like dry hay, and that is fine to use. Musty and damp is the problem. See does weed go bad for the old-versus-moldy comparison.
How to tell if your weed is moldy in 60 seconds
- Look under a bright light.Tilt the bud. A magnifying glass or your phone camera's zoom helps. Sparkle is normal. Dull patches of fuzz, powder, or threads are not.
- Smell it.Musty or mildew means stop here.
- Squeeze it gently.Good buds are springy and a little sticky. Spongy, damp, or slimy is a bad sign.
- Break a dense bud open at the stem.Bud rot hides inside. If the center is brown or gray, soft, or dusty, it's rot.
- Check the container.Condensation inside the jar or bag means the flower was stored damp, and the rest of the batch is suspect too.
Not sure after all five? If you have to squint and argue with yourself, that is your answer. Toss it. A few dollars of weed is not worth the risk.
Can you smoke moldy weed?
No. And the usual fixes don't work.
- Picking or cutting around it. The fuzz you can see is only part of the growth. Mold grows inside the bud, not just on the surface, and spores are far too small to see.
- Burning or vaping it. A lighter or a vaporizer does not reliably kill spores. In one study, heating cannabis in a vaporizer at 190 C for 70 seconds did not significantly reduce the fungi on it. Some of the toxins molds make survive heat too.
- Checking it with a black light. A black light is not a reliable mold test. Trust your eyes and nose instead.
- Rinsing or "water curing" it. Washing moldy flower does not remove what has grown inside it. It just makes it wetter.
What happens if you smoke moldy weed?
First, you didn't do anything wrong. Mold is easy to miss. What happens next depends on how much you had and on your health. Most of the time it is unpleasant, not dangerous.
- Healthy adult, a puff or two. The usual result is coughing, a scratchy throat, or a harsh taste. Drink water, get fresh air, and stop using that batch.
- Mold allergy or asthma. Mold can set off a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, wheezing, or burning eyes, and the reaction can be severe. Call your doctor if it doesn't settle.
- Weakened immune system. This is the group that matters most. Chemotherapy, a transplant, HIV, or long-term steroids all raise the risk of a real lung infection from a common mold called Aspergillus. CDC researchers who studied this say people with a weakened immune system might consider not smoking cannabis at all. If you did, call your doctor today.

One large insurance study found that people who used cannabis were about three times as likely to have a fungal infection on record. The study could not show that cannabis caused the infections. Many of the people who got infected already had a weakened immune system. For a healthy person the risk is low. It isn't zero, which is why the answer is still "toss it."
Why does weed get moldy?
Moisture. Mold spores are everywhere, and they grow when the flower is damp enough. Flower that was dried properly is too dry for most mold to grow. It gets wet again in a few common ways:
- Packed before it was fully dry. This is how sealed dispensary jars and bags end up moldy. Mold can keep growing after the flower is tested and packed.
- A sweaty jar. Opening a cold jar in a warm room makes water condense inside. If you store weed in the fridge, let the jar warm up before you open it.
- A humid room. A bathroom shelf, a basement, or a car in summer.
- A plastic bag with a bit of damp. No airflow, plus moisture, plus a few days.
There is no fixed "how long until it molds." Dry flower in a sealed jar can sit for months. Damp flower in a bag can mold in days.
What to do with moldy weed
- If you bought it from a store, take it back first.Bring the product and the receipt. Regulators tell people to return a bad product to the store or destroy it. Some stores offer a replacement or credit. Policies vary, so ask.
- Otherwise, seal it and bin it.Put it in a bag, tie it, and throw it out. Don't leave it open in the kitchen trash and don't compost it indoors.
- Report it.State regulators warn the public about moldy batches. Colorado issued several of these warnings in 2026 alone. Some states, like Colorado, have an online form to report a bad reaction.
- Check the rest of your stash.Anything stored in the same jar or the same damp spot gets the five-step check too.
- Clean the jar.Hot soapy water, then let it dry completely before it holds weed again.
How to keep weed from getting moldy
The short version: dry, cool, dark, and sealed.
- Use an airtight glass jar, not a bag.
- Keep it in a cool, dark cupboard, away from the bathroom and the car. A fridge is fine too if the jar is airtight and you let it warm up before opening it, so moisture doesn't form inside.
- Many people add a small humidity control pack made for storing herbs. Too damp invites mold. Too dry makes buds crumble.
- Don't put damp buds in a sealed jar. If flower feels wet, let it air out on a plate for a day first.
Vacuum-seal glass stash jar with pump
Pumps the air out so your buds go stale slower. Glass holds no smell. The seal locks in odor too.
- Removes most of the air that breaks down THC and terpenes
- Glass, so no plastic taste or static
- Holds in smell well when sealed
- Still keep it in a dark cupboard. Clear glass lets light in.
- A few gentle pumps is enough. Don't crush the buds.
Look for: thick glass, a one-way valve lid, and a size that fits what you actually buy (an eighth to a quarter fits a small jar).

Common questions
Is moldy weed dangerous?
It can be. The CDC says people with asthma or a mold allergy may have severe reactions to mold, and people with a weakened immune system or a lung disease may get lung infections from it. Most healthy people who take a puff just cough, but the safe move is the same for everyone: don't smoke it.
Can moldy weed make you sick?
It can. For most healthy people a puff means coughing and a sore throat. For people with asthma, mold allergies, or a weak immune system, mold can cause serious breathing problems or a lung infection.
What happens if you accidentally smoke moldy weed?
Usually coughing, a scratchy throat, or a harsh taste. Stop using that batch. If you get a fever, chest pain, or trouble breathing, call 911 or go to the ER. If you aren't sure how worried to be, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Can moldy weed be saved?
No. Cutting around it, rinsing it, or heating it doesn't remove what has grown inside the bud. Throw it out.
How do you know if your weed is moldy?
Dull fuzz, powder, or web-like patches that don't sparkle, a musty smell, and a damp or spongy feel. Break a dense bud open: a brown, soft center is bud rot.
Is mold on weed the same as trichomes?
No. Trichomes are the sparkly, sticky resin crystals that cover a healthy bud evenly. Mold is dull, fuzzy, and patchy, and it smells musty.
Can dispensary weed be moldy?
Yes. Mold can keep growing after the flower is tested and packed, especially if it was packed damp. Take it back to the store and report it.
How long does it take for weed to get moldy?
There is no set time. Dry flower in a sealed jar can stay mold-free for months. Damp flower, even in a sealed jar, can mold in days.
