Does weed go bad? How long weed stays good

Old weed won't hurt you. Moldy weed can. Here's how to tell the difference.

Quick answer

Weed doesn't expire like milk, but it does get old. Stored well, it keeps most of its strength for about a year. It slowly loses potency and flavor over time. It only becomes unsafe if it grows mold.

What happens when weed gets old?

THC slowly breaks down. One of the main things it turns into is a compound called CBN. One long-term study of cannabis stored in the dark at room temperature found THC dropped about 17% after one year and about 41% after four years.1

Smell and flavor fade even faster. Terpenes, the compounds behind the aroma, break down within months.2 That's why old weed smells like hay.

  • Weaker high. Less THC.
  • Harsher smoke. Dry buds burn hot.
  • Sleepier feel. Many people say old weed feels heavier. Research on CBN is still limited.

Old, dry weed with no mold mostly just loses strength and flavor. It's less enjoyable.

Old weed vs. moldy weed

Old: fine to use

  • Smells faint or like hay
  • Dry and crumbly
  • Weaker than before

Moldy: throw it out

  • Musty or mildew smell
  • White, gray, or green fuzz
  • Damp, spongy, or webby

Don't smoke moldy weed

Mold can make you sick, especially if you have asthma, allergies, or a weak immune system.3 Don't try to cut around it. Toss the whole batch.

Not sure if it's mold or trichomes? Trichomes are shiny, crystal-like, and evenly spread. Mold looks fuzzy, dull, or web-like. See the full mold guide.

How to store weed so it stays fresh

  1. Use an airtight glass jar.Glass doesn't hold odors. Plastic bags crush trichomes and let air in.
  2. Keep it dark.Light, especially sunlight, breaks down THC.
  3. Keep it cool.Room temperature or a bit below. Never a hot car or a sunny window.
  4. Control humidity. Many people add a small humidity control pack made for storing herbs. Too damp invites mold. Too dry makes it crumbly.
  5. Keep buds whole.Grind right before you use it. Ground weed goes stale faster.
  6. Lock it up.Away from kids and pets.

Vacuum-seal glass stash jar with pump

Pumps the air out so your buds go stale slower. Glass holds no smell. The seal locks in odor too.

Why we like it
  • Removes most of the air that breaks down THC and terpenes
  • Glass, so no plastic taste or static
  • Holds in smell well when sealed
Good to know
  • Still keep it in a dark cupboard. Clear glass lets light in.
  • A few gentle pumps is enough. Don't crush the buds.

Look for: thick glass, a one-way valve lid, and a size that fits what you actually buy (an eighth to a quarter fits a small jar).

Should you put weed in the fridge or freezer?

The fridge can help. Skip the freezer. One study found whole buds kept their THC and aroma best at fridge temperature, about 39 F (4 C). Freezer temperatures were worst for aroma.2 If you use the fridge, keep the jar airtight and let it warm to room temperature before you open it, so moisture doesn't form inside. A cool, dark cupboard also works well.

Do edibles expire?

Yes. Edibles are food first. Follow the date on the package. Brownies and cookies go stale or moldy like any baked good. Gummies and hard candy last longer. Store them sealed, cool, and dry, and keep them where kids and pets can't reach them.

Common questions

Does weed expire?

Not like food. It slowly loses potency and smell. Stored well, flower keeps most of its strength for about a year.

Can weed get old?

Yes. Over time THC breaks down and terpenes fade, so old weed is weaker and smells like hay. It's still safe unless it has mold.

Can you get sick from old weed?

Old, dry weed is generally safe. Moldy weed is not. Throw out anything musty, fuzzy, or damp.

How long is weed good for?

About 6 to 12 months in an airtight jar kept cool and dark. Pre-rolls dry out faster.

How do you store weed?

In an airtight glass jar, in a cool, dark place, and out of reach of kids and pets. A small humidity control pack can help keep it from getting too damp or too dry.

Does old weed get you less high?

Yes. One long-term study found THC dropped about 17% after a year and about 41% after four years.

Do weed gummies go bad?

Yes, eventually. Follow the date on the package and keep them sealed, cool, and dry.
