To pack a bowl, grind your flower to a medium texture, fill the bowl loosely over a screen or a bigger piece, press the top gently, and light one corner while you draw slowly. Snug, not smashed: air has to move through it.
A small pipe bowl usually holds less than a joint, and you don't have to finish it. Light one corner, take a small puff, and wait. Cover the carb hole while you light, uncover it to clear the pipe, and tap the ash out when it's done.

Parts of a bowl pipe
- Bowl: the cup the flower sits in, with a small hole in the bottom.
- Stem and mouthpiece: the tube you draw through.
- Carb: a small hole on the side of the pipe, near the bowl. Cover it with a finger while you light; uncover it to pull the smoke through. Not every pipe has one.
- Screen: an optional small disc of glass or steel that sits in the bowl and stops bits falling through.
A bong bowl is the same idea in a removable piece that slides into the bong's downstem. The bong guide covers the rest of that setup.
Step 1: grind it right
Medium is the target. Too fine and it packs into a plug that won't draw, or falls through the hole. Too chunky and it burns unevenly and keeps going out. A grinder gets you there in a few twists; fingers work if you pull the flower apart into small, even pieces and take out the stems.
Step 2: screen or no screen
Screens aren't required. Many people put one larger chunk of flower in the bottom of the bowl as a natural screen, then pack the ground flower on top. A real screen matters more for pipes with a big hole, and for anyone who hates getting bits of ash in their mouth.
If you buy screens, choose glass or stainless steel from a smoke shop. Don't improvise. The BC Centre for Disease Control has a harm-reduction sheet on pipe supplies. It warns that pipes made of plastic, pop cans or copper can release toxic fumes when heated. It says kitchen foil has a coating that can be harmful to inhale when heated, and that screens made for smoking are safer than faucet screens. A glass pipe made for smoking avoids all of those problems.
Step 3: how to pack a bowl properly
- Fill the bowl loosely with a pinch at a time, up to the rim or a little below.
- Press the top gently with a fingertip or the flat end of a lighter until it holds its shape and springs back slightly.
- Test the draw before lighting. Air should pass with light resistance. If you have to suck hard, tip it out and start looser.
Looser at the bottom and slightly firmer on top burns the most evenly. Smashed-down flower chokes the air and wastes the bowl.
Step 4: how to light a bowl
- Cover the carb with your thumb or finger if the pipe has one.
- Light one corner, not the whole surface. This is called cornering. It keeps the rest green for the next pull, or the next person.
- Draw slowly as the corner catches, then move the flame away. Keep drawing.
- Uncover the carb and pull to clear the smoke out of the pipe.
Step 5: how to smoke a bowl
- Small puffs. Big hot pulls are harsh and burn through the bowl fast.
- Don't hold the smoke in. Public-health guidelines tell smokers to avoid deep breaths and breath-holding, because they pull more of the smoke's toxic material into the lungs. Whether holding makes the high stronger is unclear. One small study found a 20-second hold made no consistent difference to mood. Another found a longer hold raised people's "high" ratings.
- Wait. Smoked cannabis kicks in fast, but the full effect can take a while. Start low, go slow: take a small puff, then wait before you decide on another. The first-time guide has the timing.
- It's done when it's gray. Ash all the way through is a cashed bowl. Once it's cool, tap the ash out into an ashtray.
A pipe is still smoke
The CDC says smoked cannabis can harm lung tissue however it's smoked, and that cannabis smoke carries many of the same toxins and carcinogens as tobacco smoke. A small bowl may mean less flower than a joint, but it doesn't make the smoke any cleaner. If you take too much, the too high page tells you what to do.
Cleaning a pipe
Resin builds up in the stem and makes every bowl taste burnt. About once a week if you smoke often, seal a glass pipe in a zip bag with isopropyl alcohol and a spoonful of coarse salt. Shake it, let it soak, then rinse with warm water until there's no alcohol smell. Rubbing alcohol is flammable, so keep it away from flames and work near an open window. The bong cleaning guide has the full method and the alcohol-free options; it works the same for pipes.
Words you'll hear
- Bowl: the cup, and also one serving ("pack a bowl").
- Carb: the side hole you cover and release.
- Cornering: lighting just one edge.
- Cashed: finished, all ash.
- Spoon, chillum, one-hitter: pipe shapes. A spoon is the classic bowl-and-stem. A chillum is a straight, cone-shaped pipe with no carb. A one-hitter is a small straight tube that holds one or two pulls.
- Greens: the first hit of a freshly packed bowl, when the flower is still green.
Common questions
Do you pack a bowl tight or loose?
Loose at the bottom, gently pressed on top, firm enough to hold its shape and still let air through with light resistance. If you have to pull hard, it's too tight.
How full should you pack a bowl?
Up to the rim or a little under, packed loosely. You don't have to smoke it all. Light one corner, take a small puff, and wait; you can always have more later.
How do you pack a bowl without a screen?
Put one larger chunk of flower in the bottom to cover the hole, then layer ground flower on top. Grind medium rather than fine so bits don't fall through.
What does "pack a bowl" mean?
To fill the bowl of a pipe or bong with ground cannabis and get it ready to smoke. People also say it to mean "let's smoke."
What is a bowl of weed?
Two things. The bowl is the cup on a pipe or bong that holds ground flower, and "a bowl" is also the amount that fits in it, one small serving. A small pipe bowl usually holds less than a joint, and you don't have to finish it.
Why does my bowl keep going out?
Usually the grind is too chunky, the pack is too loose, or you stopped drawing while lighting. Grind a bit finer, press the top a little, and keep a slow draw going as the corner catches.
Can you use a metal screen in a pipe?
Use screens made for pipes, in glass or stainless steel, from a smoke shop. Don't improvise with foil, cans or faucet screens. A BC Centre for Disease Control harm-reduction sheet warns that coated foil, pop cans and copper can give off harmful fumes when heated.
Is a pipe healthier than a joint?
No. The CDC says smoked cannabis can harm lung tissue regardless of how it's smoked. A pipe skips the paper, but you're still breathing in cannabis smoke. Vaporizers and edibles are the no-smoke options.
